Center-Right was Center-Wrong
One of the best parts of the drubbing that Republicans got last night (in combination with the drubbing they got two years ago) is that it's going to have to bring an end to the smugness of conservatives in this country. For years, Republican dominance in government has lead conservatives to think that this country is actually "center-right" in its philosophies. Turns out, they were completely wrong.
This country is as divided as one possibly could be. That means, the center is actually the center. When the ball bounces to the right, the Republicans hold more positions of power. Now, the ball has bounced back to the left, and Democrats are in control. But, I have none of the conservatives' illusions about this country actually being fundamentally liberal, only that they are currently leaning that way. Perhaps if conservatives had some of that modesty when they were winning elections, they wouldn't be so out of touch now, and wouldn't have been so thoroughly routed for two national elections in a row.
Democrats now control the next version of the executive branch, the Senate, the House, and the majority of Governors' mansions. That doesn't happen in a country that's actually to the right of center. Let's just hope the new-found power of the left doesn't quickly corrupt Democrats better judgement.
