Get Off of Larry Craig
Larry Craig is back in the news. Something about an appeal being denied. I still don't understand what this case is all about.
I'm certainly not one to rush to the defense of scumbag Republicans. Their overpopulation in our Congress has been appalling. But fair is fair. What did this guy do wrong?
From the accounts I've heard, he wasn't offering to pay anyone for sex in the airport bathroom. Let's forgo naivete, and say that he was in fact using a foot gesture to suggest to his next door neighbor that he wanted to have sex. How is this illegal? If a good looking woman walks by, and my jaw drops, can I be thrown in jail? What if Sarah Palin winks at a man in public? Is she a criminal, too?
Let's face it. Everyone wants sex. Most of us aren't getting enough of it. It certainly isn't acceptable to impose your oversexed condition on someone else, but it's not as if Craig was grabbing somebody's ass. Is the side of a man's foot so taboo of a region that it cannot be tapped without legal ramifications?
I have no problem with a cop arresting two guys (or any two people) having sex in a public restroom. That is public indecency. But, how is touching feet, with shoes on, indecent? I make that much contact with a dozen people during the course of my trip. By this standard, I have been raped several times by fat people sitting in coach. Maybe Craig would've had sex with a guy in the bathroom. If that happened, and a cop saw it, then I'd have no problem with an arrest. But, maybe Craig would've suggested that his newfound friend meet him for cocktails at his hotel. How would that be illegal? Unless I haven't gotten the whole story, I don't see how you can convict Craig of anything based on foot-tapping.
Let's cut right to this. This isn't about public indecency, or about Republicans, or infidelity, or dishonesty, or catching politicians with their pants down. This is about homosexuality. Any way to punish being gay is supported by left, right, black, white, you name it. Let's not try to massage the legal system just to legitimize bigotry.
