Global War on Logic

Over the Christmas holiday, we had another foiled attempt to blow up an American airliner, which ended with an incompetent terrorist imprisoned, but the passengers very much alive. Like Richard Reid, the "Shoe Bomber", this terrorist appears to be associated with Al-Qaeda.

Can we now put to rest the argument that we're stuck in endless wars in the Middle East because "fighting them over there means we don't have to fight them here"? We are fighting them over there, and for the second time since 9/11, we see that we're still fighting them over here. This line of reasoning is utter nonsense, and desperately needs to be called out, as President Obama, and the rest of his brainless warmongering colleagues, keep us embroiled in costly wars for our ninth year in a row.

Al-Qaeda isn't a group of school children on a field trip, whose "buddy system" prevents them from splitting up. It's very possible for their organization to be in multiple places at the same time. That's a reality we have to deal with, and fighting in the Middle East isn't keeping Islamic jihad from coming to our shores.

The other particularly offensive illogical argument is about us trying to rebuild Iraq and Afghanistan to keep terrorists from having safe havens to train in. The 9/11 conspirators trained in Germany and the US itself. Richard Reid was from England. This latest nut was from Nigeria, and organized in Yemen. They don't need a safe haven, and there's no way we can comb the entire planet to make sure there's nowhere for them to organize. That's a fruitless pursuit, and this latest attack proves it.

Of all the disappointments associated with Obama's utterly awful first year in office, the inability to see past this broken Bush-era philosophy of preemptive war is what stands out the most to me. Perhaps as disappointing is the public's tolerance for it all.
