Below is a brief list of some projects Nathan Scandella has worked on. Some past experience cannot
be described here for security and/or proprietary reasons, but relevant skills obtained from those projects can be viewed
here. A printable (albeit obsolete) resume is available for download. Also, browse a list of recent training activities.
- Mobile Application Development - Tuscan Concepts Inc.
Development of BlackBerry, Android, iPhone and iPod Touch personal utility applications for Tuscan Concepts Inc., including coding, test, and successful submission to the iPhone App Store.
- IntegratorTM Unmanned Air Vehicle - Insitu
Distributed middleware implementation for embedded UAV avionics, transport layer coding, and build process
improvements.
- Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning - Volt/Boeing
RationalTM unified process
design and coding of surveillance and communication software for
Royal Australian Air Force.
Subsystems involved electronic warfare self-protection system and internal communication system (operator voice comm).
- Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle - Boeing
Systems architecture,
artificial intelligence design, and implementation of high-level control algorithms for Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle
technology demonstrator. Implementation involved developing requirements, writing and unit testing code for use in
UCAV simulation, ground station, and embedded air vehicle mission processor.
- Weapon Systems Open Architecture - Boeing
Systems architecture, detailed design, coding, hardware integration, test, and flight demonstration
preparation for Weapon System Open Architecture
R&D program. System established a binary data stream, tunneled thru a secure tactical RF datalink layer, for conducting
real-time collaborative mission replanning between an F-15 Fighter and an airborne command & control aircraft.
Personal responsibilities focused on communications stack, application middleware, thread/process architecture,
and frequency/bandwidth management for UHF LoS and SATCOM communication links.
- Open Systems Architecture - Boeing
Software development of an Open Systems Architecture for airborne surveillance platforms,
such as the E-3/767 AWACS. Responsible for graphical interface applications, Ada95 language
conversion, compiler transition, code portability issues, vendor support, and software debugging.
- Manufacturing R&D - Boeing
Application of optical methods for improved large scale machining. Systems engineering on
machine vision system for part inspection. Software development on real-time laser tracker
system for better tolerance 5-axis composite trimming. NC control programming/interfacing.
- Smart Structures R&D - Boeing
Analytical modeling (finite-element) and fatigue/strength testing of experimental shape memory
alloy materials being evaluated for usage in active flight systems. Usage of both off-the-shelf
and original analysis software in the shape memory application designs. Implementation of
PC-based control system for high-cycle fatigue apparatus testing shape memory samples.
- Smart Structures Lab - Stanford University
Systems integration and nueral network algorithm implementation for smart structures proof-of-concept.
Apparatus included a composite laminate (flat-plate) embedded with piezoelectric sensors.
Strain data from sensors was used to predict/identify impact location on the plate, representing a self-diagnosing aircraft skin.
- Reliability, Maintainability, and Supportability Engineering - Northrop Grumman
Design of vehicle health monitoring algorithms, avionics, and composite battle damage repair,
documentation of failure data, and reliability/maintainability estimations for trade studies.
Programs included RLV/X-33
(@ Rockwell), B-2, and JAST(a.k.a. JSF). DoD “SECRET” clearance.
- Photovoltaic Power Systems, Mars Pathfinder - NASA Jet Propulsion Lab
NASA Flight Project research evaluating the viability of solar cells in the
Mars Pathfinder
power system. Research fellowship involved writing a funding proposal, designing the experiment,
acquiring and assembling the apparatus, taking data, and presenting results.
- Thermophysics - National Institute of Standards and Technology
Standards-grade laboratory testing, chemical analysis,
and sample preparation for thermophysical property measurements in extreme environments. Reduced and analyzed test
results. Adjusted and maintained experimental apparatus. Experiment flown on
STS-85 Space Shuttle mission.
